The Birth of Siddhattha

On the full moon day of May, in the year 623 BC, there was born a Noble Prince Siddhattha, in the Sala grove at Lumbini park near Kapilavatthu on the India borders of present Nepal, who was destined to be the greatest religious teacher of te world.

His father was King Suddhodana of the Sakka Kingdom and his mother, Queen Maha Maya. His clan's name was Gotama, which means "Nobel" and his personal name was Sidhattha meaning "wish fulfilled" or "fulfillment of walfare."

As soon as the birth took place, on the full moon day of Vensakha (May) in the beautiful park, the baby Siddhattha uttered this wounderful announcement.

Aggohamasmi Lokassa = "I am the supreme in the world"
Jetthohamasmi Lokassa = "I am the chief in the world"
Setthohamasmi Lokassa = "I am the worth in the world"
A ya mantima jat = " This is my last birth"

Those were the first words of the prince, Siddhattha Gotama.
