Life story of a political prisoner -- Nai Yekha

By Lawiweng

Nai Yekha jailed for being into politics is now incarcerated in Insein prison for six years now. He was sentenced for life. With Burma's current political situation continuing to be unstable, knowing his mind he is determined to keep up his work for democracy in Burma said his wife who visited him recently.

Nai Yekha and other Burmese political prisoners such as well known Ko Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Kyi, Ko Mya Aye, Ko Min Zayar, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and U Win Tin, are charismatic leaders of Burma. For instance, Ko Min Ko Naing loves to talk about freedom and peace. But, Nai Yekha loves to talk about how to get rid of the Burmese military regime.

This article is the story of Nai Yekha's life in prison, about his wife, how she works hard for her family and her visits to her husband in prison.

All of us make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. And to save a life? I use this expression from Time Magazine and hopefully it will be helpful in bringing home the point from the article to the reader for awareness of how some people can help Nai Yekha's life and his family.

There may be some people who have forgotten him as he has been in prison for a long time. His wife however often thinks when she will meet him again in prison and when she will visit him, what kind of food to take for him and what to tell him for encouragement. All of us only remember him during his annual birthday celebration. Then, we just go about our work and forget about him.

All of us may not think that we can help him and his family. There are some of us who can help him and his family. For instance, people who have money can provide for him. But, the people who can only write letters can write letters of encouragement to him.

After he was arrested his wife's life was one long struggle for her family. His wife is teaching in a Burmese high school. She has three children and she earns a small amount of money from teaching. Her life changed after her husband went to prison.

I met a friend last year and he told me how Nai Yekha's family is faring. He provided 30,000 kyat to the family. According to him, Nai Yekha's wife has to sometimes bribe the prison's guard to visit her husband.

Nai Yekha has given up his life for the people. All of us make a life, we should help him back to honor his job. So, all of us should offer him an award or a medal for encouragement.

All of us can win our revolution by peaceful means. Only with a good mind, kindness, and compassion can we win our goal. May Nai Yekha have peace and holy freedom in mind?
