Suu Kyi gets extra 18 months house arrest after 'sham' trial

The leader of the democracy movement in Burma was sentenced to an additional 18 months house arrest today for breaking the terms of her detention.

Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, 64, was convicted of violating the law by allowing an American man into her lakeside home in May. The man, John Yettaw, 53, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Ms Suu Kyi was jailed for three years following the hearing at Yangon's Insein prison but this was reduced by Burma's military ruler Than Shwe, who also ordered she could serve the time in her home.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown today said he was "saddened and angry" at the conviction and described the trial as a "sham". He said it was a "political sentence" designed to prevent her from taking part in next year's elections.
