Calgary -- The 12the Annual General Meetings of the Mon Canadian Society (MCS) was held on December 25, 2009 at the Mon Buddhist Temple in Calgary, Canada.
Activities and financial reports of 2009 were reported and discussed. The Mon community members voted 15 Central Committee members and 7 Central Executive Committee (CEC) members. 7 CEC members are comprised of Nai Khaing Waeng as Chairperson, Nai Chan Toik as Vice Chairperson, Nai Layeh Mon as General Secretary, Ong Chan Mon as Joint General Secretary, Ong Chem Tala, Nai Teissa and Nai Rot Gakow.
Ms. Sajien Htow who attended the meeting told Kaowao that she was quite pleased to see the members elect experienced and strong leaders this time. “I am satisfied with the outcome and our community will become strong under their leadership,” she added.
The MCS aims to promote and preserve Mon culture, through literature programs and the social well being of the Mon in the homeland and in exile, while networking with the international community to end civil war in Burma and to establish a federal union. The Mon Community in Canada was first founded in 1995 by a small group of Mon who resettled in Canada from Burma. The city of Calgary, Alberta, dubbed ‘cowtown’ by Canadian citizens has become home for over a hundred Mons because of its booming economy in Canada in previous years.
