Akon Zaw Latt
“I will continue to devote my life to fight for the freedom for my people,” said Akon Zaw Latt, a prominent Mon Buddhist monk and a political prisoner, speaking to a crowd at his re-ordination on February 20th.
During the chanting in the Buddhist ordination hall, he gave his word as he promised to continue fighting for his peoples’ freedom.
Akon Zaw Latt was re-ordained as a Buddhist monk at PeeTeeKort monastery, in Mudoon village, Chaung Zone Township in Mon State. Present at the celebration for his re-ordination, were over 30 Mon youth monk activists, also fighting for ethnic freedom.
When he was arrested by the government on January 7, 2010, he was charged with the documentation and distribution of human rights newsletters from human rights organizations outside of Burma, as well as working with media groups and becoming involved in activities against the 2010 election. He had been sentenced to 15 years.
After two years in prison, Akon Zaw Latt received amnesty from the new government and was recently released on January 13, 2012.
“With regards to religion and the rights of ethnic people, we should fight for it today. We should not wait until tomorrow,” Akon Zaw Latt said.
